River City Reading Festival to be October 14, 2007
The first River City Reading Festival, a citywide celebration of books and reading, will be Oct. 14, 2007, at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.
The festival will include book signings, author and illustrator appearances, crafts and workshops, and other activities designed to appeal to all ages.
Altrusa Club of Lawrence, a service organization that promotes literacy, has joined with several community partners to plan, organize, and present the festival. Partners include Kansas University Libraries, the KU Department of Teaching and Leadership, Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Public Library, and the Lawrence school district.
A steering committee has been assembled to oversee details of the event. Kassie Edwards, Altrusa member and massage therapist, is chair of the steering committee. Christine Kenney, Altrusa member and assistant United States attorney, is vice chair, and Linda Varberg serves as secretary.

- Publicity: Julie Tollefson, Altrusa member and communications director at the KU Center for Research on Learning
- Volunteer Coordination: Sally Brandt, past president and district director of Altrusa and health care consultant
- Site Logistics: Linda Finger, planning consultant
- Food and Beverage: Fifi Paden
- Hospitality: Lori Michel, Altrusa member
